46 Days?

There has been much controversy in my family the last week over how many days make up Lent. Lent is supposed to represent the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, but according to the calendar, there are 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.
I looked it up today- there are 40 days in Lent because the 6 Sundays in Lent don't count. They are considered "little Easters".
What is interesting about this discovery is that all our lives we believed it was ok to "cheat" on your Lenten promise. In other words, if you gave up candy then you could have some on Sunday and it did not count against you. This was a rule we were taught by Mongie when we were little kids.
Now that I know the deal with Sundays in Lent, it makes total sense. No way would Mongie have cheated on her Lenten promise, she was just playing by the rules since Sundays don't actually count in Lent.
