Brooklyn Canaries

Last summer when my parents moved into their new house, they would always tell us about these crazy canaries that lived in the trees on their street and the street across the canal from them. For months I thought there was one or two green birds living in the neighborhood. Then when I was there for Thanksgiving, I saw about 20 chubby little green birds in the yard across the street from them.
So last weekend my Dad tells me that he was watching the news recently and there was a story on these "Brooklyn Canaries", which are the same crazy pack of birds that live in their neighborhood. The story is that years ago, in the 60s or 70s, a crate of canaries was accidentally opened at JFK airport and the birds got lose and some of them live in Brooklyn, some in Amityville and some a few towns east of Amityville. Weird. They don't fly south for the winter and a guy down across the canal from my parents feeds them peanuts in the shell.

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.
