I have a good memory, I guess its kind of my super power. So I thought it would be a good idea to get some of these memories out before I forget them, or they get any more tarnished than they already are. I'm no spring chicken, you know. And holding onto memories, some of which go back 31 years, is a lot of responsibility for a girl who can barely remember to feed the dog every morning.
So here it is, me in all my randomness and the memories that are bouncing around in this brain of mine. Hopefully this will help free up some floor space up there so there is room for all the new memories I plan to hold onto.
I remember standing in the doorway of the kitchen in the house I grew up in and my parents told me, Erin and Kerry that they were having another baby and me saying "I don't want another baby, I like it just the three of us" I can't remember if I actually said it or just thought it, but my sister Jenny is 3 years younger than Erin and I so that was a really long time ago. (Sorry Jenny...I didn't really mean it!)
In nursery school, there was a bully girl in our class, she was always bugging me & Erin, so one of us pinched her one day and we both got in trouble. I can picture exactly where we were in the nursery school. The class is held in a house on the grounds of a church and there was a room to the left of the front door- I think it might have had all the little kid cubbies in it and she took a toy or something away from one of us so we pinched her. Trust me, she had it coming.
In first grade, this boy named Steven told me that there was an abandoned house behind the school and that someone was killed inside it and it scared the crap out of me, so much so that I had nightmares for weeks until I told my mom about it. I can also remember in first grade getting in trouble on the playground for cursing. Guess somethings never change- once a potty mouth, always a potty mouth.
I ran into my first grade teacher when I was about 20 years old and she remembered me!
I think it was second grade that I got sick in school all over the bathroom. My classroom had a bathroom inside it, and I can remember sitting in there trying to figure out how I could clean it up before I opened the door. All I know is I got sick when I was walking to the nurse too and then my parent's friend picked me up from school because my mom wasn't home. (Remember when the janitor would put that saw dust stuff on the floor to cover the barf)
My second grade teacher lived in the house behind Mongie's.
In third grade this kid Glen tortured me, he was always pulling my hair and stuff. I was a really good speller in third grade and one time I even failed a spelling test on purpose just to see how it would feel. I think it was third grade that I was a sun for Halloween and my costume was a huge cardboard sun that I had to take off while I sat at my desk ( I wore a yellow sweater and orange pants under it- come on, it was the early 80s).
I think I had the same teacher for third grade that Erin and I had for kindergarten.
When Erin and I were little we would play dress up at Mongie's house, wearing all of her clothes and jewelry and Pamps- our grandpa would sit downstairs and wait for us to come to the top of the stairs and show off our outfits. He passed away when Erin and I were five so I have no idea when these memories are from.
Once Erin and I were playing Batman and Robin jumping on the beds in our room. I feel and hit the corner of my eye on the edge of the foot board and had to get stitches. Another time we were playing "house" and I pulled an old phone out of the toy box (yup, a big black rotary phone) and pretended to answer it and handed it to Erin saying (no doubt in a snotty little voice) "Its your boyfriend!" And she grabbed that phone and whacked me right in the eye with it. Another trip to the emergency room for stitches. I remember laying in the hospital with a sheet or something over my face and a hole cut out around my eye where they were stitching.
I have had two recurring dreams in my life, plus a million other random ones that I remember, but that's a whole other post. I had this dream when I was little and I remember having it when I was sick, I thought I had it more than once, but that could just be because I remember it so clearly. It was balls of playdough rolling back anc forth and getting smaller or bigger as they rolled. And there were some plastic forks and spoons in there too, I have no idea what their role was...weird. The other is a dream that I am driving over the Bay Bridge and my car has to go upside down over the water and I am frozen with fear. ( I am super afraid of bridges).
I remember being in the hospital when I was a young kid and being freaked out that my parents could not sleep there with me. I have no clue why I was there, I just remember being in this room and the blue light of the room at night and someone staying with me, maybe it was a nurse, named Wendy? I still have this little stuffed bear that someone gave me when I was there, it's eyes are missing and it sits on Elle's dresser now with Dora, Boots and the gang. It might have been the same hospital visit, but I remember having blood taken and staring out the window at the wires outside that had these orange balls on them. I think someone told me they were to help helicoptors land on the roof?
I am not too sure that I have this one right...
I learned how to ride a bike sans training wheels first, but Erin learned how to hang upside down from the monkey bars first.
Speaking of bikes, I remember the first "big" bike I had, a pink Huffy. And the first 10 speed, it was navy blue.
Sometimes Erin and I would ride a bike Lavern and Shirly style, you know the person on the front pedals standing up and the other person sits on the seat with their feet hanging off the sides. I can't believe we actually pulled it off since we were usually laughing our butts off the entire time.
More to come...
