A Series of Unfortunate Events

Last night went something like this in the Hughes house....
After dinner Wade was cleaning up the kitchen and I walked in and smelled the mystery smell again (this "unusual" smell has been hiding in our kitchen all week). So Wade pulled out the fridge and there was a puddle of water under it from the ice-maker leaking...our brand new fridge! So he cleaned that up, but we had to leave the fridge sticking out so the puddle could dry up. Which is a pain because our kitchen is small and for the rest of the night I had to squeeze in and out of the kitchen because the fridge was blocking most of the doorway.
1:00 am
Magoo and I woke up at the same time to a weird noise. I woke up Wade and he got out of bed to look outside. Someone who was at my neighbor's house left their car idling in front of our house. Then about 45 minutes later he sped off in a loud screech down the street. Which woke us up again.
2:30 am
We hear 2 loud noises which sound like gun shots- I have never heard a gun shot, but I would imagine that it sounds like this. And a big flash of light and boom, the power goes out. So our house is in complete darkness, and one of our smoke detectors has a low battery so it is beeping every few minutes for the rest of the night. We found out later that a car hit a pole and knocked the power out.
4:50 am
I wake up and remember this crazy dream...someone was coming over our house so their dog could meet Magoo and I was going to let the dogs out in the back yard so they could run around. So I look out the back door and there is a lion, 2 tigers and a horse hanging out in my back yard. So this is what sleep deprivation does to the brain...hmmmm.
5:38
I finally get up for good because I cannot stand having to get out of bed and check the time on Wade's cell phone anymore. I take a shower by flashlight- thank God our water heater is gas, can't dry my hair because the power is still out, or iron my clothes, so I make lunch and let Magoo out and get dressed in what I am hoping are clothes that do not have too many wrinkles.
Here's the best part of the whole morning. I wake up Elle, bring her into our room since that's where the flashlight is and get her changed. The whole time she is asking to watch TV. We tried to explain to her that we can't turn the TV on because there is no power, but she wasn't getting it.
Poor little TV addicted kid, she didn't know what to think of our freezing cold, pitch black, quiet house. She was all out of sorts. So we all just got our stuff and left for work and Mimi's- where there was light and heat.

Needless to say, I am taking a few lessons away from this day...
1. I could never, ever have lived on Little House on the Prairie.
2. Be organized and prepared- if I were organized and ironed my clothes the night before I would not be walking around covered in wrinkles today.
3. I think my daughter is just as obsessed with TV as her parents.
